Seller checklist (Alberta)

  • Complete the standard bill of sale (REG3126). The bill of sale must include the full names and addresses of buyer and seller, VIN, make/model/series/style/colour/year, the vehicle cost, and signatures from both parties.
  • Give the completed bill of sale to the buyer. The buyer needs the bill of sale to register the vehicle at a registry agent.

Buyer steps after the sale

  • Get insurance and register the vehicle at a registry agent. Alberta allows a limited period (e.g. 14 days in some cases) to complete the transfer—verify current rules at Alberta.ca.
  • Bring the completed bill of sale to the registry agent.

Additional notes

  • Alberta.ca lists optional details that can be added to the bill of sale, such as odometer reading, phone numbers, witness signatures, lien information, and payment terms.
